The Sahlgrenska Academy

The Sahlgrenska Academy is the faculty of health sciences at the University of Gothenburg. Education and research are conducted within the fields of pharmacy, medicine, odontology and health care sciences.

About 4000 undergraduate students and 1200 postgraduate students are enrolled at Sahlgrenska Academy. The staff is about 1400 persons. 850 of them are researchers and/or teachers. 2008 Sahlgrenska Academy had a turnover of 1900 million SEK.

Repeated anaesthesia can affect childrens ability to learn

[3 Mar 2010] There is a link between repeated anaesthesia in children and memory impairment, though physical activity can help to form new cells that improve memory, reveals new research from the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Breastfeeding protects children against peptic ulcer bacterium

[17 Feb 2010] Young children in developing countries are infected at an early age with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which can cause peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. New findings show that childrens´ immune responses help in fighting the bacteria. In addition, breastfeeding and better hygiene appear to protect against infection. The results provide hope for a vaccine, a thesis from the Sahlgrenska Academy shows.

New DNA technique leads to a breakthrough in child cancer research

[15 Feb 2010] Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy and Karolinska Institutet have used novel technology to reveal the different genetic patterns of neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer. This discovery may lead to significant advances in the treatment of this malignant disease, which mainly affects small children.
